Kerry Godliman on growing comedy, her hawthorn tree and cold plunges
7/9/202631 min
A new best friend for all of us!
Kerry Godliman is our second Outsiding guest and brings with her some serious growing credentials. The actress and comedian, known for her roles in Afterlife, Derek and Whitstable Pearl, is a keen and proud gardener with her own potting shed. She also (not that Caitlin is going to mention it) has some great celebrity crushes, including Colin Firth (or is it Mark Ruffalo?) and our very own Adam Frost.
She’s very good at keeping it cool though, as we bask in full sunshine in Caitlin’s old established garden while the new one remains a work in progress. We get to hear all about her comedy special, Bandwidth, available to watch on Comedy Central now, and how she’s into taking a cold plunge... but perhaps not every month of the year.
Kerry’s big day out ends with a few gifts from Adam, and Caitlin uses her love of birds to pair one with Kerry. Does it prove to be a good match?

Outside In is a Cold Glass production. [upbeat music] I am Adam Frost.
Caitlin Moran· Host0:04
And I am Caitlin Moran.
Adam Frost· Host0:06
And this is Outside In, our show about the joys of being in the garden.
Caitlin Moran· Host0:11
And why we think the outside is the best place to be.
Adam Frost· Host0:15
[upbeat music] Shall we explain maybe what it's about again? Because we're only on the second episode.
Caitlin Moran· Host0:23
I know, but still buzzing from our first.
Adam Frost· Host0:25
I am.
Caitlin Moran· Host0:25
Which we had, uh, uh, Bob Mortimer in our garden talking about all things Outside In, basically.
Adam Frost· Host0:30
Yeah.
Caitlin Moran· Host0:30
The whole idea is it's the moment that you leave the house, through the front to the back garden, that moment of sighing relief where you go, "I'm gonna potter in my garden. I'm gonna go for a walk. I'm gonna go for a swim," and finding other people who are as nerdy, often, as the outdoors as we are.
Adam Frost· Host0:42
It's interesting, innit, 'cause then I feel very privileged the fact that I've done it since I was about this high. I mean, that means I've gained about 40-odd years on most people.
Caitlin Moran· Host0:52
This summer's really exciting for both of us 'cause we're in my old garden- Yeah ... at the moment that I've had for 20 years. But this year I got a new garden. Next door have given me a bit of their garden.
Adam Frost· Host1:01
Yeah.
Caitlin Moran· Host1:01
So I'm making that over from scratch with you. And you also have a new garden that you're making.
Adam Frost· Host1:05
Yeah, so we moved, what, in October. Um, and I did exactly what I tell other people not to do, don't get stuck straight in. My defense is it was a complete blank canvas.
Caitlin Moran· Host1:16
And you're Adam Frost, so you can.
Adam Frost· Host1:18
[laughs] Well, in theory. [laughs] So it went down to a little river, um, which it, and it all, it, it feels perfect. I mean, yeah, and so now I've sort of cut all the levels. I've designed the whole garden.
