Journal Club - Can knitting reduce blood pressure?

4/22/202633 min

For this journal club episode we discuss the commonly made claim that knitting can reduce blood pressure. We discuss the origins of this claim in the research and look at a new paper which examines the impact of a creative handicraft group, which included knitting, on a group of older adults living in a residential home.

Before we get started with the podcast, I just wanted to let you know about a couple of changes we've made to our audio course, Self-Care: One Stitch at a Time. This is our 11th session audio course based on the psychological principles of acceptance and commitment therapy, otherwise known as ACT, and it helps you learn about how to use knitting intentionally as part of your self-care. We've recently moved this to Podia, which is the platform we use for our webinars, which has allowed us to do two new things. So first of all, we've been able to give you access to the introductory session of Self-Care: One St- Stitch at a Time for free. So if you've been curious about the course and aren't sure if it's for you, you can now listen to the introduction for free on our website to try it before you buy. Secondly, we've decided to add our webinar, The Healing Power of Knitting, to the audio course. W- which means that when you buy the audio course, you also get the webinar, He- The Healing Power of Knitting, as part of the bundle. That means that alongside the session we already have that covers the research into knitting and mental health, you can watch our updated version of that content in our hour-long webinar as well. If you'd like to find out more and to listen to the introduction for free, you can go to creativerestoration.org and click on courses or follow the link in the show notes. [upbeat music] Hello, and welcome to a journal club episode of the Why I Knit podcast. I'm Dr. Mia Hobbs, and I'm here with Dr. Paula Redmond. Hi, Paula.
