The White House says the U.S.-Iran war is “terminated” for the purposes of an approaching congressional war powers deadline, even as President Donald Trump huddles with military leaders over potential new strikes. Oil briefly spiked past $126 a barrel, pushing U.S. inflation to its highest year-on-year rise since May 2023. Trump signs an end to the 11-week partial government shutdown, restoring funding to most of Homeland Security. And in Australia hundreds clash with police demanding retribution for the murder of a five-year-old Indigenous girl. Listen to the Morning Bid podcast here. Hi, I'm Kim Vennell in Wanganui, New Zealand. It's Friday, May 1st. Today, [gentle music] the White House says the Iran war is over as far as Congress approval is concerned, while Trump speaks to top military brass about next steps. The 11-week partial government shutdown comes to an end, and clashes in Australia after the murder of a five-year-old indigenous girl. This is Reuters World News, bringing you everything you need to know from the front lines in 10 minutes, seven days a week. [tense music] We begin with some seemingly contradictory developments from the US over its war with Iran. On the one hand, the White House says the US is technically no longer at war, at least as far as the War Powers Resolution is concerned. The resolution gave President Donald Trump 60 days from notifying Congress about the war to end it or request an extension. That deadline is today. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has said the ceasefire with Iran meant the clock stopped ticking on that deadline. On the other hand, Trump met with top US military leaders late last night, reportedly to discuss new strikes that could make Iran negotiate an end to the conflict.
