The Rappahannock River moves like liquid pewter in the early light. You watch it from the window of a modest house perched above the water, where the air smells of wood smoke and damp earth. This is Ferry Farm in King George County, Virginia, and you are 11 years old. Your name is George Washington, though nobody calls you that yet with any particular reverence. You're simply the eldest surviving son of Augustine Washington, a tobacco planter who died when you were 11, leaving you with more questions than inheritance.
