How Can England stun the Springboks?

7/2/202655 min

What are the odds that England beat South Africa in Johannesburg on Saturday?

From South Africa, Will Kelleher is joined by Alex Lowe and Charlie Morgan to look ahead to England’s massive opening clash in the Nations Championship at Ellis Park. The panel debates whether Steve Borthwick's side can pull off a monumental upset on South African soil. Is this team stronger than anything they selected in the 6 Nations? How will Henry Pollock perform as he faces the Springboks for the first time? And, how will England play, following their dismal 6 Nations?

[upbeat music] Hello, everyone. This is The Ruck, the journalist rugby podcast from The Times and The Sunday Times. We're back on the ground in Johannesburg as promised. Thursday episode with Alex Lowe.

  2. Alex Lowe· Panelist0:25

    Hello.

  3. Will Kelleher· Host0:25

    How's it going?

  4. Alex Lowe· Panelist0:26

Pretty good. Pretty good, thank you. Yeah, Padel's going well. Interesting team announcements this week.

  5. Will Kelleher· Host0:33

    Yeah.

  6. Alex Lowe· Panelist0:33

Hoping to do a bit more exploring than I have done of Johannesburg so far. I'd like to go to the Apartheid Museum- Okay ... and maybe Nelson Mandela's house.

  7. Will Kelleher· Host0:40

    Bit of culture.

  8. Alex Lowe· Panelist0:41

Well, it's been a bit, it's a little kind of staid here, if that's the right word.

  9. Will Kelleher· Host0:46

    Mm-hmm.

  10. Alex Lowe· Panelist0:47

It's a bit soulless. We're in Sandton in a hotel attached to a shopping mall, where really the only thing to do is to play Padel, so we have made full use of the Padel club.

  11. Will Kelleher· Host0:55

Yeah. And we're joined by a very special guest on The Ruck- [laughs] ... this week, Alex.

  12. Alex Lowe· Panelist0:59

    [laughs] Yeah.

  13. Will Kelleher· Host0:59

It's the one and only Ted Lasso.

  14. Alex Lowe· Panelist1:01

What great timing, given- Yeah ... we're in the middle of the Football World Cup.

  15. Will Kelleher· Host1:03

I was well and truly banced up by Steve Borthwick. [laughs] [laughs] Um, asked him- It's actually Charlie Morgan, by the way. [laughs] I asked him a question, and he paused and said, "What's this?" Looking at my mustache, which has been around for a couple of months. But he- Yeah ... maybe more- That's a lot of good attention to detail.

  16. Charlie Morgan· Panelist1:18

You've had that for a long time, actually, Charlie ...

  17. Will Kelleher· Host1:19

yeah, more pronounced maybe with a wet shave just before I came out, um, as in came to the presser. And he, yeah, put a lot of pressure on my question, I thought. Because- Mm ... there was quite a lot of chat about Ted Lasso
