4/17/20261 hr 19 min
On Hayley Mills's 80th birthday weekend, Gyles speaks to the legendary actress and her sister, Juliet Mills, about their remarkable lives and careers. They talk about their parents, Sir John Mills and Mary Hayley Bell. They talk about their famous godparents, who included Vivien Leigh and Noel Coward. They talk about their first acting jobs - Juliet on stage, and Hayley in Tiger Bay. They talk about taking a Pekingese to a meeting with Walt Disney and about losing Oscars. There are moments of great insight and wisdom - it's worth listening for Juliet's philosophy of a happy marriage, and for Hayley's life lessons. This is a very special, star-studded, and very touching episode of Rosebud, and we're honoured to bring it to you.
Happy birthday Hayley Mills!

This is Rosebud, a conversation about people's memories. Welcome to the party. Cue the music. [upbeat instrumental music] Hello, this is Gyles Brandreth again. This is Rosebud again. This is a special Rosebud again. But I think this is a very special Rosebud because we have two guests, and we have them for a reason. They're two actresses that I have known and admired for almost all my life, as you will discover. I first saw them in performance in the 1950s when I was a little boy. One of them is marking this weekend, if you're listening to this live, we're on a Friday, and tomorrow, Saturday, the 18th of April, will be the 80th birthday of Hayley Mills. Hayley Mills, well, she was a child star. She won an Oscar as a child star. She made six, or was it eight, big movies for Walt Disney years and years ago. But she's gone on as a stage actress, a film actress. She's a remarkable human being. She's a friend of mine now.
