HackedePicciotto: New Album, Creative Process & More

6/15/202624 min

The Germany based duo HackedePicciotto with Alexander and Danielle join Music Matters host Darrell Craig Harris to talk about their latest album and a new path moving forward!

About the Duo

Hackedepicciotto is an experimental duo consisting of longtime partners Alexander Hacke (of Einstürzende Neubauten) and Danielle de Picciotto, an American-born musician, artist, author, and filmmaker. Their work together consists primarily of stirring soundscapes blending acoustic instruments such as violin, hurdy-gurdy, and autoharp with rumbling bass guitar and electronic feedback. Both artists sing and chant -- de Picciotto recites colorful, poetic lyrics, and Hacke occasionally throat sings. While the pair describe their music as "cinematic drone," they incorporated postindustrial rhythms into their 2020 full-length The Current and the more expansive, symphonic 2021 release The Silver Threshold. With 2023's Keepsakes, they focused on personal themes while expanding their list of collaborators and instrumentation.

  18. Darrell Craig Harris· Host0:42

    Okay. Awesome.

  19. Danielle de Picciotto· Guest0:43

Lichtung is a German word. Um, it means clearing. It's kind of like a, you know, in a way, a safe space.

  20. Darrell Craig Harris· Host0:51

[laughs] Oh, okay. Awesome. And you guys, um, along with this album, uh, which is actually I should mention, it's all in German. Um, uh, was your last album in German or h-how-- You've kind of mixed it up a little bit, right?

  21. Danielle de Picciotto· Guest1:03

No, it's, um, always been in English 'cause I write the lyrics, and I'm American.

  22. Darrell Craig Harris· Host1:09

    Ah, okay.

  23. Danielle de Picciotto· Guest1:09

So I read and think and dream in English, but because we basically settled down in Berlin again after being nomads for 14 years, um, I decided that it was time for me to, you know, s- do an album in German if I'm living in Germany. I kind of felt like it's a matter
