[upbeat music] You're listening to the Gospel and Life Podcast. What kind of relationship does God actually want to have with us? The Bible uses many images to describe how God relates to us, as a father, a friend, a spouse, and a king. Today, Tim Keller takes a closer look at one of these dimensions of God and how it helps us see the depths of His grace and love more clearly.

[upbeat music] We're doing a series on who God is, and we're looking at some pretty, usually long passages from the Hebrew scriptures, the Older Testament. I-- we're gonna look at Ezekiel sixteen. This is actually a very gripping parable of the relationship of God to His people, and, uh, there's four acts to it. It's almost like a drama. And we're gonna read these four acts, parts of the passage, parts of the chapter. I have to apologize 'cause actually I-- my-- it was my fault. I left out verse fifty-nine. It's not printed, but when I get to verse fifty-nine, I'm gonna read it even though it's, it's not printed. Ezekiel sixteen. First act, verse three to ten. "This is what the Sovereign Lord says to Jerusalem: Your ancestry and birth were in the land of the Canaanites; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite. On the day you were born your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to make you clean, nor were you rubbed with salt, nor wrapped in cloths.
