GABA, Methylene Blue, Mitochondria and The Parasympathetic Edge with Dr Scott Sherr

3/24/20261 hr 7 min

In this episode, Dr. Jockers sits down with Dr. Scott Sherr to break down why so many people are stuck in fight or flight and what it's really doing to your brain and body. You'll learn how GABA acts as the "brake system" for your nervous system and why low levels are linked to anxiety, poor sleep, and burnout. They also unpack why fixing stress is not just mental, but deeply biological.

You'll get a clearer picture of what's actually going on inside your cells when you feel exhausted, wired, or mentally foggy. Dr. Sherr explains how your mitochondria play a central role in all of it and why supporting them can change how you feel day to day. They also talk about tools like methylene blue and oxygen therapy, and when they can actually make a difference.

They also get into why constantly pushing harder isn't the answer, and how being able to slow your system down can actually improve your performance. You'll hear what it really means to shift into a parasympathetic state and why so many people struggle to get there. It may change the way you think about stress, recovery, and what your body actually needs.

We used to think that depression, for example, was a serotonin deficiency, and that's why we were giving serotonergic drugs or drugs that increase serotonin like SSRIs, like Paxil and Prozac and things like that. But we now know that there is no evidence that serotonin levels are lower in people with depression versus the people that don't have depression. But their GABA levels, by the way, are lower. GABA deficiency is absolutely associated with depression.

  2. David Jockers· Host0:23

Well, welcome back to the podcast. Our topic today is GABA optimization, mitochondrial recoupling, and the parasympathetic edge with my guest, Dr. Scott Sherr. We're gonna talk all about the importance of GABA, the brakes in your brain. We're gonna talk about why humans are stuck in fight or flight, in the sympathetic spiral of doom, and we're gonna talk about the parasympathetic edge, how this enhances our, our healing, our recovery, our energy, our brain function. We're gonna talk about mitochondrial recoupling and key compounds that can help to activate the mitochondria and recouple it for optimal energy production. We're gonna talk about how to leverage oxygen in our system for better energy production, how to rewire the nervous system and pull our body from stress and survival to adapt to really health and thriving. And so a little bit about Dr. Scott. He's a board-certified internal medicine physician, uh, certified to practice health optimization medicine, and a hyperbaric oxygen therapy specialist.
