Outlouders, enjoy this free taster of Holly Wainwright, Clare Stephens and special guest host Laura Brodnik from The Spill on our subscribers-only episode. You can listen to the full conversation: The One Big Lie Blown Up By The Kylie Doco
The Netflix doco Kylie has officially dropped, and the nostalgia we are feeling is quite real. Today, Holly, Clare and Laura are unpacking the three-part series.
From the ‘singing budgie’ era to two-time Grammy Award winner, it's the ultimate masterclass in career longevity. So why does our collective obsession with the ‘Princess of Pop’ run so deep, and what does Kylie’s story tell us about the grit and resilience behind the fame?
What do you mean, you're not a subscriber yet? Solve that problem HERE.
We discuss her first cancer diagnosis at age 36, her decision to postpone chemotherapy to try IVF and the revelation of her second, very private battle with breast cancer.
Also, the slightly awkward raw honesty of Jason Donovan, her relationship with INXS frontman Michael Hutchence and the lure of your first true love. Plus, the touching way her friend Nick Cave articulates her magic might just be our absolute favourite part of the entire thing.

And Nick Cave, in his later years, has become such a sage. He, you know, he writes about grief and loss, and he's become a sort of elder statesman. And the way that he talks about Kylie was just, I couldn't.
Clare Stephens· Host0:21
Oh, when he says, when he talks about their collaboration and he says, "I had credibility and no mass appeal, and she had mass appeal and no credibility," I'm like, "Yes. Yes." And then, but I thought the cleverest, most kind of acknowledging the elephant in the room thing that he said was when he called her up and basically said, "You need to go back to where the pop bang is," and he's like, "No one wants to be indie."
Holly Wainwright· Host0:46
Yeah.
Clare Stephens· Host0:47
[laughs] And I'm like, that is so true. Like, anybody who is a writer, an artist, a musician, anything, it's like, yeah, being indie is all cool and like, yeah, my integrity and everyone else is a sellout, but everyone wants to be Kylie Minogue.
Laura Brodnik· Guest1:01
[laughs] Yeah, you want the audience.
Clare Stephens· Host1:03
Yeah.
Holly Wainwright· Host1:03
Yeah.
Laura Brodnik· Guest1:04
Yeah.
Holly Wainwright· Host1:04
But, but what is well expressed in parts of this doco is that's true, but also it can be very uncomfortable- Mm ... because it comes with no credibility.
Clare Stephens· Host1:11
Yeah.
Holly Wainwright· Host1:11
And if you've built yourself on credibility, that's an awkward fit.
Clare Stephens· Host1:14
Yes.
Laura Brodnik· Guest1:14
You want that.
Holly Wainwright· Host1:15
I loved when he described when the Bad Seeds, he and the Bad Seeds met her, and they said, "We'd never met anyone in h- in our lives who liked life." [laughs] [laughs] [laughs] "And we were terrified of her."
Laura Brodnik· Guest1:25
They were shocked at it.
Holly Wainwright· Host1:26
[laughs] She comes in probably a bit like you just described.
Clare Stephens· Host1:29
Yeah,
