Flotilla activist abuse coverage, BTS at Sydney Writers Festival + is James the 'good Murdoch'?

5/26/20261 hr 9 min

In this episode, Jan and Antoinette explore why flotilla activists trying to break Israel’s illegal blockade are finally getting media attention, and look at how one interview took a very bizarre turn.

We explain why the largest mining company in the world is suing the small independent outfit Michael West Media and why you’ve probably not seen much about it.

Plus we give you an inside look at the Sydney Writers Festival and examine the latest Murdoch media purchase by the apparently “good” Murdoch brother, James.

Antoinette gives her yes to a premium niche Aussie newspaper making a return to print, while Jan appreciates writers’ festivals showing more bravery.

[classical music] Hello, and welcome to this episode of We Used To Be Journos. This is the podcast where two media insiders break down broken news. I'm one of those media insiders. My name's Jan Fran.

  2. Antoinette Lattouf· Host0:12

I am Antoinette Lattouf. And Jan, I am so happy that you've missed me.

  3. Jan Fran· Host0:16

Oh, okay. Who told you that?

  4. Antoinette Lattouf· Host0:18

    You did.

  5. Jan Fran· Host0:19

    I did, I know.

  6. Antoinette Lattouf· Host0:20

[laughs] We haven't been doing the podcast weekly, uh, because Jan, you've been in Venice, I've been on the road with my book tour, Women Who Win, all over the country. I'm not the s- kind of person who misses people."

  7. Jan Fran· Host0:41

    Wow.

  8. Antoinette Lattouf· Host0:41

And then, uh- That is a lot of information there to share with the world, but yes, I- I did say that. [laughs] And then she came crawling back. She's like, "Guess what? I missed you." [laughs] Yes, yes. I knew it. I knew I was adorable.

  9. Jan Fran· Host0:52

[laughs] [laughs] 'Cause I- I noticed something different, which is just like, "Oh, you know what? Antoinette is not annoying me about bass" [laughs] Uh, that's- that's new and interesting.

  10. Antoinette Lattouf· Host1:01

Yeah That was a novel feeling. [laughs] That's true, our tax statements. But yeah, you have been in Venice. I have been in Canberra, s- Perth, Margaret River, all over the place, meeting so many of the eterati.

  11. Jan Fran· Host1:12

    Mm.

  12. Antoinette Lattouf· Host1:13

And I've loved, loved, loved, loved people coming up and introducing themselves as Lynette, and wearing it's a no from me T-shirts. So- Yeah ... anyway, we are back and our content is... We'll be back as usual from this week.

  13. Jan Fran· Host1:25

Yeah, that's right. And, um, indeed, I have been in Venice, as you say, um, which is... I- I was
