Fatboy Slim The Chaos Behind The Fame, Fatherhood & The Legacy of Fatboy Slim!
6/11/20261 hr 19 min
behind Fatboy Slim. In this episode of Begin Again, Fatboy Slim, aka Norman Cook, joins Davina to talk about fame, family, sobriety, music, and the chaos behind becoming one of Britain’s most iconic DJs. Norman opens up about the early years of discovering music, changing his name, finding freedom through punk, and realising that DJing was not just about playing records, but about bringing people together. From The Housemartins to Fatboy Slim, he reflects on the moments that shaped him, the identity he created, and why he always wanted to be remembered. Davina and Norman also explore his relationship with Zoe Ball, becoming a tabloid “power couple,” raising children in the middle of fame, and what happens when life becomes chaotic behind the scenes. He speaks honestly about partying, parenthood, divorce, friendship, and why their greatest triumph has been remaining a family even after the relationship ended. At its heart, this is a conversation about legacy, joy, and learning to begin again when the life you built no longer fits who you are becoming. Fatboy Slim reminds us that success is not the same as peace, and that sometimes the bravest thing you can do is change the music and keep dancing. 🌟 Follow for more honest conversations about identity, growth, and beginning again. My dad thought that being a musician was just above being a prostitute, really, in his eyes. So all I wanted to do was prove my dad wrong.
Davina McCall· Host0:05
And Jesus Wept- It engulfed.
Norman Cook· Guest0:08
It engulfed everything ...
Davina McCall· Host0:08
your first two albums were like...
Norman Cook· Guest0:10
And I remember on the news, Donnie Osmond, he's playing Crazy Horse's, "Wow, wow." And eight-year-old me- Yeah ... just went, "I wanna do that."
Davina McCall· Host0:20
Can we talk about Woodstock?
Norman Cook· Guest0:21
There was footage of my trailer on fire. [laughs] And in Brighton, the woman from the council said it was perceived that your crowd was sort of good-natured. If this had been an Oasis gig, we would've been [censored].
Davina McCall· Host0:32
[laughs] [laughs] Tell me about Zoe.
Norman Cook· Guest0:34
I remember when I told my manager, he went, "If you and Zo are a couple," he said, "Your life is never gonna be the same."
Davina McCall· Host0:39
Wait, tell me why.
Norman Cook· Guest0:40
We're probably actually better friends [laughs] than we were when we were a couple.
Davina McCall· Host0:44
What was life like for you back then?
Norman Cook· Guest0:46
Chaos. There was nights when I was struggling to speak and to walk, and the people around me were like, "Are you gonna be all right?"
Davina McCall· Host0:53
Mm.
Norman Cook· Guest0:53
And I'm like, "Get me on the stage, I'll be fine." It's only when you come off you realize [laughs] how drunk you are.
Davina McCall· Host0:57
I've got a present for you.
Norman Cook· Guest0:58
Is this gonna make me cry?
Davina McCall· Host0:59
I hope so. [laughs] Our paths have kind of weirdly crossed, not that many times, but we kind of know each other or know people who know each other, and over decades- Yeah ... have kind of got to meet a few times.
Norman Cook· Guest1:17
Key moments as well, I think.
Davina McCall· Host1:18
Mm, yes, key moments.
Norman Cook· Guest1:19
Key, key moments. I think I've definitely been with you at my highest.
Davina McCall· Host1:22
Yes.
Norman Cook· Guest1:23
And- Possibly mine as well ... possibly some of the lowest.
Davina McCall· Host1:26
Yeah.
Norman Cook· Guest1:26
Yeah. And then we've both been through lows, but then the last time I saw
