The Trump administration is set to sign a landmark civil nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia to help the kingdom set up a civilian nuclear program. The 30-year agreement would reportedly allow American companies to help develop Saudi Arabia's nuclear energy program, including the potential construction of a uranium enrichment facility under US oversight. The deal comes as Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has repeatedly said the kingdom would pursue a nuclear weapon if Iran develops one, saying in a 2023 interview, quote, "If they get one, we have to get one for security reasons and for balancing power in the Middle East." Administration officials argue the agreement gives Washington greater oversight over the kingdom's nuclear ambitions while benefiting American companies. Critics warn it could weaken non-proliferation standards and potentially lead to more countries in the Middle East seeking a nuclear enrichment program.
