Episode 130: Rewards, punishments & Star Wars

5/10/20261 hr 5 min

Rewards and punishments are a part of daily life for anyone supporting children, sometimes consciously but often without us even realising. In this episode we discuss the developmental psychology behind them, how it can help us to guide our kids to healthier choices and behaviours and where we might be caught out ("it's a trap!"). We want them to choose the light side of the force by understanding the how, when and why of rewards and avoid pushing them towards the dark side through punishments, fear and control. We hope you like this episode and we can't wait to read your reflections, questions and advice about rewards and punishments in your own journey through the galaxy.

  7. Billy Garvey· Host0:24

[laughs] Great one, though. Great one. And we tried to, yeah, make it a really practical topic this time- Yeah ... about something that I think all of us really struggle with.

  8. Nick· Host0:32

    Yes.

  9. Billy Garvey· Host0:32

What's the right thing to do with rewards? What happens with punishments? You know, um, and trying to be really understanding that all of us have a different experience with this, and then the big important stuff around- Totally ... breaking cycles.

  10. Nick· Host0:44

I think if you're in that cycle of reward and punishment, which I know I am day to day, not in a bad way, but just in a way, what I thought was interesting was how you can transition people over to more of, um, intrinsic motivation, potentially looking, uh, moving on from rewards the whole time. Is that kind of where- Yeah ... we're going with this- Beautiful ... and trying to get to?

  11. Billy Garvey· Host1:04

    Yeah. I don't think it's black and white. I don't think it's like be perfect. I think it's- No.

  12. Nick· Host1:07

Goodness no. There's always gonna be carrots and sticks and stuff like that. [laughs] Which we want to be... Is that right? Or is that wrong? I shouldn't have said that maybe. No, worry about carrots, but like not sticks. Sorry. [laughs] Bad.

  13. Billy Garvey· Host1:19

    It's great. It's great.

  14. Nick· Host1:20

I'll stuff this up. Hope you enjoy the episode, guys, and I'm really looking forward to your questions. Make sure you contribute your questions and contribute- Yeah ... them sooner rather than later. That would be- The earlier the better. The earlier the better.

  15. Billy Garvey· Host1:29

    Also advice.

  16. Nick· Host1:29
