Emergencycast! – Farage opts for by-election martyrdom

7/7/202625 min

Quick-fire reaction to Nigel Farage’s resignation with Jacob Jarvis, Andrew Harrison and Jonn Elledge… For his latest trick, the Reform leader has quit as an MP after weeks of scrutiny over his finances finally caught up with him. In a whingeing speech, teed up hours in advance, Farage triggered a by-election in Clacton and says he’s determined to win it back. Is this a genuine appeal to voters or just a stunt to take the heat off the sleaze inquiry? Above all, what might happen next?

[upbeat music] Hello and welcome to an emergency edition of Oh God, What Now, coming to you after Nigel Farage reached new heights of attention-seekery as he resigned as an MP in order to spark a by-election he intends to run in. I'm Jacob Jarvis, and it's been a little while since I've done one of these, but we've had to scramble pretty quickly, so we've gone with who we had in the studio. And luckily, I have two highly esteemed colleagues with me. So I've got Andrew Harrison. Hi, Andrew.

  2. Andrew Harrison· Host0:44

    Hello.

  3. Jacob Jarvis· Host0:45

    And John Elledge. Hi, John.

  4. Jonn Elledge· Panelist0:47

I mean, whiny is right. I was thinking of, um, you know, uh, the Father Ted bit?

  8. Andrew Harrison· Host1:15

    Yeah.

  9. Jonn Elledge· Panelist1:16

Is that, "And now we move on to liars."

  10. Andrew Harrison· Host1:18

"And now we move on to liars."

  11. Jacob Jarvis· Host1:18

    Yes.

  12. Jonn Elledge· Panelist1:18

[laughs] That was, that was the tone.

  13. Andrew Harrison· Host1:19

The golden cleric is what it is.

  14. Jonn Elledge· Panelist1:21

    Yeah.

  15. Jacob Jarvis· Host1:21

    Yeah.

  16. Jonn Elledge· Panelist1:21

It was, like, literally just kind of like stringing together a list of grievances while we're all sat there going, "Are you gonna... Are you going or what?" Um, and then announced
