Ellyse Perry: Australia's Greatest Dual-Sport Athlete on What Two Decades of Elite Sport Really Takes
5/10/202644 min
Ellyse Perry is arguably Australia's greatest dual-sport athlete, the only person to have represented Australia in both cricket and football at an international level.
In this conversation, she reveals the mental framework behind scoring a Test double century, why she finds deeper meaning in team sport than individual achievement, and how a competitive childhood on Sydney's North Shore set the foundation for everything that followed.
Perry also discusses the evolution of her training across two decades at the top, the growth of women's cricket, and the almost meditative headspace she finds batting in the nets - a window into how one of Australia's most enduring athletes thinks about performance, longevity, and what the game gives back.

Ellyse Perry· Guest0:03
[chuckles] Thanks for having me.
Mark Bouris· Host0:04
Man, with a name like that, seriously, you gotta do something great.

But for somehow it's like you're always destined to do something big. And were you always a sports person?
Ellyse Perry· Guest0:27
[laughs] Um, I think sport's always been part of my life. Um, Mum and Dad were both incredibly sporty growing up, um, and just, you know, active lifestyles, I suppose. Where were you raised? Which part of Australia?
Ellyse Perry· Guest1:00
Uh, mostly on the North Shore of Sydney.
Mark Bouris· Host1:02
Do you think that someone like you, you had a special upbringing in that regard relative to what you see today? Do you ever think back that that was pretty special when you think about it?
Ellyse Perry· Guest1:11
I, I think about the conscious ef- effort that my parents would've made, um, which I think at the time I certainly wasn't aware of, um, just how much time and energy Mum and Dad spent making sure that we were outdoors and being active and, and also, like, being involved with us. Um, you know, my dad taught me how to,
