Dr. Jen Ashton on GLP-1 Drugs, Cancer Research, and the Future of Weight Loss Medicine

6/15/202610 min

In this special bonus episode of Greta Wire, taken from Greta Van Susteren’s NEWSMAX show The Record, Greta is joined again by Dr. Jen Ashton for an important update on GLP-1 medications, the class of drugs commonly associated with weight loss treatments such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro. Greta opens with a new study from the Cleveland Clinic suggesting that GLP-1 drugs may be linked to reduced tumor growth in patients diagnosed with several obesity-related cancers, including breast, liver, kidney, pancreatic, colorectal, and non-small cell lung cancer. Dr. Ashton explains why the findings are generating excitement, while also stressing that the study was observational and that randomized controlled trials are still needed before drawing firm cause-and-effect conclusions. The conversation expands beyond weight loss into the broader medical possibilities of GLP-1 medications, including potential effects on the immune system, inflammation, cancer progression, recurrence, prevention, and arthritis symptoms. Dr. Ashton also addresses a major real-world barrier: insurance coverage. While doctors can prescribe FDA-approved medications off-label in many circumstances, insurance companies may refuse to cover them unless they are prescribed for approved indications. Greta and Dr. Ashton also discuss the financial logic behind prevention, asking whether insurers may eventually decide it is cheaper to cover these medications earlier rather than pay later for complications tied to obesity, cancer, heart disease, and other serious conditions. This bonus episode serves as a timely update to Dr. Ashton’s previous Greta Wire appearance on GLP-1 medications and why their impact may extend far beyond simple weight loss. [guitar strums] The weight loss drugs are turning into almost miracle drugs. Yes, they certainly help lose weight, which is great for the heart and self-esteem, but there is now more news about them. A recent study from the Cleveland Clinic suggests GLP-1 drugs, which these weight loss drugs are, can stop cancer. The study looked at five years of data from more than 10,000 people. Researchers focused on people who were diagnosed with seven different types of cancer. The types included breast cancer, lung cancer, and pancreatic cancer. Researchers looked at patients who started taking GLP-1 drugs after they were diagnosed with one of those seven cancers, and the study found in six of the seven cancers, patients were less likely to see their tumors grow.
