Divorce Lawyer Reveals: Why 'Best Husband' Wives Are Leaving Their Husbands in Ghana

5/13/202656 min

In this raw episode of Unbroken Podcast, host Richard Akita sits down with Kofi Boateng - a lawyer, ordained minister, and 23-years-married husband — who dismantles the dangerous fairytale that love alone can sustain a marriage, revealing the brutal moment when "I do" stops being romantic and starts being real, the uncomfortable truth that what attracted you to your spouse is the exact same thing that will eventually distract you, the shocking reality that in many Ghanaian and African homes spouses are hiding financial assets from each other because "she'll make too many demands," and the painful epidemic of women filing for divorce not because their husbands cheat or beat them — but because he simply doesn't have enough money, even when he comes home every night, works hard, never lies, and is by every other measure "the best husband you could ever have." [dramatic beat] At what point does one have to be to say, "You know, this is not working anymore"? When you say, "I do," that's when love actually opens your eyes. That's when you start noticing all the things that they do that irritate you.

  2. Kofi Boateng· Guest0:10

    Yeah.

  3. Richard Akita· Host0:11

    Is their love not enough?

  4. Kofi Boateng· Guest0:12

You can do everything right. You're just one person in the relationship. 'Cause whilst you're thinking not, the other person is dealing with all kinds of demons in their lives. In a lot of our homes, spouses are hiding financial assets. They'll tell you if they tell you, you're gonna make too many demands. And so she's suffering economic abuse, and that's the reason why she wants to get out of the marriage. But when you look into it, he doesn't have it. He works hard. He does everything that he's trained to do. This man that you have who comes home every day, who is trying, doing his best, he's the best husband you could ever have.

  5. Richard Akita· Host0:47

If there's one advice you could give to a couple on the verge of a divorce, what would it be?

  6. Kofi Boateng· Guest0:53

[beeping] The interesting thing is that this person who's a serial cheater was like that before you met them, and you knew it, and you got married to them. And you know, one of the things that we also need to pay attention to is the fact that the things that attract us are the same things that become a distraction. He's the life of the party.

  7. Richard Akita· Host1:11

    Mm-hmm.

  8. Kofi Boateng· Guest1:12

He's making everybody laugh. And then you get married, and he's flirting with everybody. He hasn't changed.

  9. Richard Akita· Host1:17

    No.

  10. Kofi Boateng· Guest1:17

This is exactly who you met.

  11. Richard Akita· Host1:19

    Yeah. So they're now married.

  12. Kofi Boateng· Guest1:21

    Yeah.

  13. Richard Akita· Host1:21

And they're finding out all these things.

  14. Kofi Boateng· Guest1:23

    Yeah.

  15. Richard Akita· Host1:23

How do they deal with it? [dramatic beat] Okay,
