In this episode of Unfiltered Waters, Katie Hoff sits down with Daniel Wiffen, Ireland’s first male Olympic swimming medalist, fresh off a historic performance in Paris where he won gold in the 800 freestyle and bronze in the 1500.
Daniel takes us inside the mindset behind his Olympic breakthrough, breaking down how detailed race analysis, data, and preparation gave him the confidence to execute on the biggest stage. He walks through the strategy behind his 800 freestyle win, what he was thinking in real time during the race, and how he uses research to gain an edge over the competition. The conversation also dives into his transition to training at Cal, building a high performance training culture, and the mentality shift that came after setbacks like appendicitis.
From competing in open water at the Olympics to documenting his journey on YouTube and even his past as a child actor, this episode shows the full picture of who Daniel is beyond the pool. This is a conversation about confidence, preparation, and what it really takes to win at the highest level.

What's up, everybody? Welcome back to another week and another episode of Unfiltered Waters, and this week we travel into foreign waters. We get to speak with Ireland's own Daniel Wiffen, and Daniel is the first male swimming Olympic medalist from Ireland after he captured gold in Paris in the 800 freestyle, as well as securing bronze in the 1500. And Daniel is working through some transition right now, training in one place for five years in Ireland, and now moving over the past year to Cal to train with his brother, Nathan Wiffen. Uh, and the reason that we were able to even talk to him is he's here in Atlanta cheering on Nathan, uh, in his first year at NCAAs with the Cal Bears. And when this episode airs, Daniel will have already competed at the Irish Trials, where he has made a big statement. He never wants to lose again. So big expectations coming out of the Irish Trials, preparing for the Commonwealth Games. But it was so fun walking down memory lane with him, talking through his mentality and how much research goes into his confidence when he's executing a race, what he was thinking about in the 800 and the 1500, and even his crazy experience swimming the 10K in the Seine in Paris. We talk about it all the time on the pod of being a feeler swimmer versus a data swimmer, and Daniel
