For the past year and a half, one rising star Democratic senator has dominated the headlines. That's freshman senator Ruben Gallego, who managed to eke out a victory in Arizona back in 2024, even as Kamala Harris lost that key state by almost six percentage points. Since then, he's been considered a major contender among Democrats for president in 2028, and making a lot of popular and populist noises about taxing the rich and going after corruption. But over the past few months, Gallego has been making headlines for, well, less positive reasons. His longtime friend, Eric Swalwell, resigned from Congress after being accused of sexual misconduct by several women, prompting scrutiny of Gallego's own relationship with Swalwell. And this past week, Axios revealed that the Department of Justice is investigating Senator Gallego for alleged campaign finance violations, just after the Senate Ethics Committee closed their own inquiry into Gallego, clearing him of any wrongdoing.
