Connor Herson couldn’t legally drive when he freed the Nose in 2018, competently navigating up his way up a route only Lynn Hill and Tommy Caldwell had freed. The climbing world wondered where this prodigy would take traditional climbing. In the years that followed, Connor was busy with regular teenage life – finishing up high school and heading for college. In 2025, the climbing world stopped wondering and watched as the 22-year-old put together the single greatest year of trad climbing.

Well, I own a couple pairs of black pants, 'cause all technical outdoor pants are black. Uh, I only own one red tee, or two now, I guess. [laughs] But no, I'm all about the, the single pair of clothes. I do everything in my inside clothes and my outside clothes, and I basically have one outfit that I have going for months at a time. I mean, like, right now, I'm wearing my pajamas, the same pajamas I wear every day, uh, that I'm not climbing outside.

Alex, do you remember the first time you, you bumped into the Hirson family or heard about them in the Valley?

I actually don't remember the first time I met them in the Valley, 'cause I actually, I'm pretty sure I met the Hirson family for the first time at a sport crag in Utah when I was young. But at that point, Jim Hirson was already a huge personal hero of mine, and I remember his old website.
