Can a spider eat a wasp?

2/3/202630 min

Today we’re stepping into the ring for a battle of the insect world. Molly and co-host Kiaan try to find out if a spider can eat a wasp. They speak with Dr. Paula Cushing. She has been researching spiders for over three decades. Plus, we flip the script and ask if a wasp can eat a spider. Then, Molly goes full game show mode and puts Kiaan in the contestant chair to play Spidey Sense. We also have a brand new Mystery Sound and a big mailbag reveal.

    [upbeat music] Lemonada.

  2. Kian· Host0:05

[upbeat music] Brains On Universe. You're listening to Brains On!, where we're serious about being curious.

  3. Molly Bloom· Host0:17

[upbeat music] What has eight arms and is super cool?

  4. Kian· Host0:22

    An octopus.

  5. Molly Bloom· Host0:24

Well, yes, those are certainly cool, but I was thinking of spiders.

  6. Kian· Host0:28

Oh, I love spiders, but I would describe them as having eight legs.

  7. Molly Bloom· Host0:34

Good point. We say octopuses have arms, but usually people say spiders have legs. But, like, what's the difference?

  8. Kian· Host0:42

Well, I guess it depends on what you use them for most, walking or grabbing.

  9. Molly Bloom· Host0:48

Yeah, it's like hair and fur. We say animals have fur, but we have hair, but they're made of the same stuff.

  10. Kian· Host0:55

Oh, gosh, you're right! My brain is starting to hurt.

  11. Molly Bloom· Host0:59

Yeah, me too, or, or like a whale's blowhole. It's basically the same as our noses, so why don't we call that hole the whale's nose? Or why don't we call the thing on our face a blowhole?

  12. Kian· Host1:11

Next time I have a cold, I'm gonna say my blowhole is runny.

  13. Molly Bloom· Host1:15

Great idea. I'm gonna do that, too. But back to my original thought: what has eight legs and is super cool? Spiders.

  14. Paula Cushing· Soundbite1:24

When we eat, we chew it up and swallow it, and all the breakdown of that food
