Cairn Is a Climbing Game for the Real Ones

1/29/202651 min

Climbing games have become a trend over the past few years, ranging from the AAA mountains of Death Stranding to the indie polygonal crags of Peak. But no climbing game has been as loyal to the actual physical experience of ascending cold, hard rock as Cairn. The guys report on their time on the cliffs. Plus, Plante shares his feelings about the brilliant adventure game, Perfect Tides: Station to Station. You can hear more about that game in Plante’s recent interview with its creator, Meredith Gran.

  1. Griffin McElroy· Host0:00

I'll tell you the problem for me, and it is honestly sort of a deal breaker, because I don't like a lot of mess, you know?

  2. Chris Plante· Host0:09

    Mm-hmm.

  3. Russ Frushtick· Host0:09

    You're a clean boy.

  4. Griffin McElroy· Host0:10

Uh- You're so clean. Yeah, I don't, I don't like having stuff on me, right? And so all the chalk while playing Cairn- Yeah ... it's getting all over my Raw Bile IX.

  5. Russ Frushtick· Host0:20

    Oh.

  6. Griffin McElroy· Host0:20

It's getting all over my pants.

  7. Russ Frushtick· Host0:21

    No.

  8. Griffin McElroy· Host0:21

It's getting all over my couch. It's getting freaking everywhere. I don't know why they- the game comes with a big bag of chalk and says, "You have to do... You have to have this on while you play it."

  9. Russ Frushtick· Host0:31

Yeah. I, I also didn't appreciate that it came in, like, writing chalk for- it didn't come in powder. It didn't come like LeBron James.

  10. Griffin McElroy· Host0:38

You've gotta squish it up yourself. Exactly. It's like, why do it that way?

  11. Russ Frushtick· Host0:41

    Why do it?

  12. Griffin McElroy· Host0:42

Why even do it at all?

  13. Chris Plante· Host0:44

I think I know what went wrong here.

  14. Griffin McElroy· Host0:47

    Okay.

  15. Chris Plante· Host0:47

You... [sighs] So you're, you're actually only supposed to use the chalk on your hands. You're not supposed to fully disrobe and cover your entire body in chalk.

  16. Griffin McElroy· Host0:57

Okay, see, that's the... Okay, so that's the... I've never climbed a rock before, guys. How am I supposed to know?

  17. Chris Plante· Host1:03

    I know.

  18. Russ Frushtick· Host1:03

You might- I know. I think I was watching, just recently, I was watching the live free climbing ep- uh, what is his name? Alex Harnold was climbing the- Honold. Honold was climbing the mountain, and- Yeah ... and, or the building.

  19. Griffin McElroy· Host1:15

    Not a mountain.

  20. Russ Frushtick· Host1:16

    The building.

  21. Griffin McElroy· Host1:16

[laughing] So you didn't watch this at all.

  22. Russ Frushtick· Host1:19

    So this is great.

  23. Griffin McElroy· Host1:19

    I wanna be really clear.

  24. Russ Frushtick· Host1:21

[chuckles] I was watching it, and he- Uh-huh ... used his butt crack at one point to leverage- Yeah ... a windowsill.

  25. Griffin McElroy· Host1:28

    Yes.

  26. Russ Frushtick· Host1:29

    And- Sure ... I
