Benching Bellingham, Thomas Tuchel & England Argentina Rivalry! | The Overlap Fan Debate
6/8/202649 min
Welcome back to the Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet.
In this special episode we are talking all things World Cup. Will Scotland finally get out of the group and what do our English fans make of Thomas Tuchel’s squad selection?
Shay Given and Jamie Carragher are also joined by Jonathan Wilson, reliving some of his favourite World Cup moments, including Maradona’s 2 goals in 5 minutes in 1986!
We start the show by discussing the price of tickets for fans, and how many fans are being outpriced for the tournament ahead.
We then move on to Scotland. Their first World Cup since 1998, brothers from the band Skerryvore, Daniel and Martin Gillespie are hopeful on getting out of the group labelling Scott McTominay and John McGinn vital players.
The episode then turns to the Three Lions. The debate is initially on Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad with big names being left out such as Adam Wharton and Trent Alexander- Arnold.
We also discuss how England will set up, their chances of winning and will Tuchel favour Jude Bellingham for England’s first game against Croatia?
Who will have a better tournament England or Scotland? Let us know in the comments and don’t forget to subscribe!

Who believes England are gonna win the World Cup? I'm gonna put me hand up. [laughs] [laughs] Well in, I love that.
Speaker 2· Panelist0:07
It's our first World Cup in 28 years, from Scotland, so huge buzz around the country when we qualified. We know FIFA, and we thought it would get better when Blatter went. It feels to me like it's actually got worse.
Jonathan Wilson· Guest0:16
If you're giving money to country X to build their stadium, well, the delegate from country X is gonna keep voting for Infantino.
Speaker 2· Panelist0:23
I personally was really looking forward to this World Cup. But then all of a sudden, everything around it has just completely turned it on its head.
Jamie Carragher· Host0:30
What's your first reaction when you seen the squad?
Dan· Panelist0:32
It's either gonna end with group exit or going all the way, and not much [laughs] in between.
Speaker 2· Panelist0:36
Little bit dubious about Tuchel when he came in, just for various reasons. We talked about how honest he is in press conferences. I love it, but it, it makes me wince a little bit.
Jonathan Wilson· Guest0:43
Mm. That directness, that candidness he has, precisely 'cause he's German, he doesn't care.
Shay Given· Host0:48
And you're talking about Jude Bellingham, if he, first game of the World Cup, goes, "Jude, you're sitting on the bench next to me" That'll be a big moment. I mean, that stones the harmony out the window on day one, isn't it?
Speaker 2· Panelist0:56
'Cause everyone talked about Scotland, the old enemy, and oh this, that. For me, Argentina. Argentina-England games are incredible.
Shay Given· Host1:03
Be interesting to see how, how your team do.
Jamie Carragher· Host1:04
My team?
Shay Given· Host1:05
England.
Jamie Carragher· Host1:06
Oh, my team's Liverpool. [laughs] [laughs] Hello, and welcome back to the Fandy Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet. Today's episode is a World Cup special as we look ahead to the tournament in the summer. So Shay's back with me once again. A big hello to our supporters. And a warm welcome to, uh, journalist, author,
