Andy Robertson: Losing Diogo Jota, Klopp’s Impact & World Cup Dream | My Best Coach EP 2

5/21/20261 hr 13 min

This episode of My Best Coach with Andy Robertson is produced in partnership with Gillette.

In this exclusive interview on The Overlap, Ian Wright sits down with Andy Robertson and former Scotland manager Gordon Strachan, one of the most influential figures in Robertson’s career.

Having handed Robertson his Scotland debut, Strachan reflects on Andy’s early years and the determination that drove him from early rejection to becoming a two-time Premier League champion and Champions League winner with Liverpool.

Robertson also opens up to Wrighty about his nine-year journey at Anfield, discussing Liverpool’s difficult season, how close he came to joining Spurs, and the relentless demands of playing under former manager Jürgen Klopp.

The conversation also turns to the heartbreaking loss of close friend and teammate Diogo Jota.

We explore Robertson’s rise to the top and how every setback helped shape the player and leader he is today.

Finally, Andy discusses the pride of captaining Scotland, what it would mean to lead his country out at the 2026 World Cup, and his ambitions for the tournament ahead.

Nobody can prepare for what we had to, what we had to go through. You know, the first time me seeing the lads after, you know, the trophy days, we're on a plane on the way to one of our mate's funerals. I probably wasn't ready to play in the Premier League when they let me play.

  2. Ian Wright· Host0:13

    Seriously?

  3. Andy Robertson· Guest0:13

I was only one year pro at that point. Do you know what I mean? And then we go to the QPR game away and he throws me in.

  4. Ian Wright· Host0:19

    Blondie.

  5. Andy Robertson· Guest0:19

    Are you okay?

  6. Ian Wright· Host0:20

    [bell dinging] Oh.

  7. Gordon Strachan· Guest0:21

Obviously he couldn't get Jurgen Klopp.

  8. Ian Wright· Host0:23

Gabba, hello. [laughs] [laughs] All three of us had problem with size when we were young. I used to get a lot of- Speak for yourself.

  9. Andy Robertson· Guest0:28

[laughs] What was I on? I was on 18 quid a week.

  10. Ian Wright· Host0:32

    18 pound a week?

  11. Andy Robertson· Guest0:33

18 pound. So that's like, I think we know we can't live off that now.

  12. Gordon Strachan· Guest0:36

But you get 20% off at Marks & Spencer if you've got the M&S card.

  13. Andy Robertson· Guest0:39

[laughs] I did have a discount, yeah, but- You haven't got that discount any more? No, I, I lost it.

  14. Gordon Strachan· Guest0:42

'Cause I'm in there a lot, you know.

  15. Andy Robertson· Guest0:43

    I lost the discount card.

  16. Gordon Strachan· Guest0:43

As you can tell, I'm in there a lot. [laughs] The coaches that you had then, they still gave you the love for the game. 'Cause it can be quite disappointing then.

  17. Andy Robertson· Guest0:52

    That's it.

  18. Gordon Strachan· Guest0:52

'Cause most of us who got the knock back, I got it for Hibs when I was 15, it becomes disappointing. But if you get these great coaches then that make you love it, then they, they understand.

  19. Andy Robertson· Guest1:00

Hull had put the bid in and it had been accepted.

  20. Ian Wright· Host1:02

    How much was it?

  21. Andy Robertson· Guest1:03

    Uh, 2.85 million, I think.

  22. Ian Wright· Host1:05

    Wow.

  23. Andy Robertson· Guest1:05

And then the chairman accepted it, and I remember seeing him in training that day, Stephen Thompson, and he was like, "Oh, you're going to Hull." And I was like, "Oh, I'm not sure." And he was like, "No, you're going to Hull."

  24. Gordon Strachan· Guest1:14

[laughs] [laughs] And the World Cup, any tickets?

  25. Andy Robertson· Guest1:18

No. [laughs] [laughs] Anything for you, Gabba.

  26. Ian Wright· Host1:20

After nine years you are gonna be leaving, uh, Liverpool. [singing] That's my favorite part. Look.
