#618 - Shawn Johnson East on DWTS at 17, Olympic Pressure, Why She Retired Young & Life After Gymnastics

6/2/20261 hr 11 min

Shawn Johnson East joins Bobby to look back on her life as an Olympic gymnast and the pressure that came with competing at the highest level from such a young age. She shares what it was like doing Dancing with the Stars at 17, why Olympic trials felt even harder than the actual Olympics, and how the constant need to win affected her mentally. Shawn also opens up about why she retired young, learning to separate her identity from gymnastics, and what life has looked like after stepping away from the sport that defined so much of her childhood.

We get to ask other people questions, 'cause we're sick and tired of being asked questions.

  4. Speaker 20:15

Hey Jonas is available now, and their first guest is a big one: Paul Rudd.

  5. Speaker 40:19

You know, Steve Carell is a great singer.

  6. Speaker 30:21

Didn't he tell you not to audition for The Office or something?

  7. Speaker 40:23

    I told him.

  8. Speaker 30:24

    Whoa.

  9. Speaker 40:24

  11. Speaker 50:34

[gentle music] Every family has its secrets, but what happens when you discover that your dad has been living a double life?

  12. Speaker 60:43

  16. Speaker 61:03

[upbeat music] Here's something that should not be as complicated as it is: getting a racist statue removed. And here's something that should be a whole lot easier than it is: getting a new one put up in its place. I'm Akilah Hughes, and Rebel Spirit season two is about both of those things.

  17. Speaker 81:21

As I was watching these statues come down, I was thinking about what it meant that I grew up in a majority Black city in which there were more homages to enslavers than there were to enslaved people.

  18. Speaker 61:29

    Listen to Rebel
