509: Death in Hell's Kitchen

6/25/202652 min

IT'S PRIDE MONTH AND STILL WE CAN'T HAVE ANYTHING NICE. Ugh. In 2022, a string of unusual deaths of young gay men rocked the neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen, NYC. Well "unusual" only if you're not the NYC cops who just assumed that because these men were gay, and that they died of self-inflicted drug overdoses. But thanks to the friends and loved ones of these victims WHO DEMANDED ACTION, the deaths were finally connected and understood for what they were - a serial killing spree. Join us as we track down these POS bad guys who robbed and killed these men LITERALLY TO BUY BOOZED AND SNEAKERS. But then go listen to Lady Gaga or Barbra or Madonna or whatever BECAUSE THEY WILL NOT STEAL OUR JOY!

  1. Patrick Hinds· Host0:00

Girl, I'm wearing my Oscar Wilde Memorial Bookshop T-shirt in honor of the gays today.

  2. Gillian Pensavalle· Host0:04

    Love.

  3. Patrick Hinds· Host0:05

So anyone who doesn't know, spend a little time on their Wikipedia page.

  4. Gillian Pensavalle· Host0:08

    Yes.

  5. Patrick Hinds· Host0:08

It's really fascinating. The Oscar Wilde Memorial Bookshop was founded in 1967 by Craig Rodwell, my favorite LGBTQ plus, um, person from history. He also founded what we now know as the Pride March. But the Oscar Wilde Memorial Bookshop, um, was the first gay-owned bookstore in the world. And we're pretty sure it was the first openly gay-owned business in America.

  6. Gillian Pensavalle· Host0:28

    Unbelievable.

  7. Patrick Hinds· Host0:29

It's a really amazing story. Go look them up. They closed in 2008. We tried desperately to save it.

  8. Gillian Pensavalle· Host0:34

    Mm.

  9. Patrick Hinds· Host0:34

Weren't able to, but the building is still there.

  10. Gillian Pensavalle· Host0:36

    Yes.

  11. Patrick Hinds· Host0:37

There is a plaque, and you should go check it out. I think it's 13 Christopher Street.

  12. Gillian Pensavalle· Host0:40

    It's real history, man.

  13. Patrick Hinds· Host0:41

Yeah. [upbeat music] Girl, what are we talking about today?

  14. Gillian Pensavalle· Host0:49

Uh, welcome to the bonus episodes. This is, I believe, our sixth bonus episode. This is, uh, that show People Magazine Investigates.

  15. Patrick Hinds· Host0:55

    Yeah.

  16. Gillian Pensavalle· Host0:55

This is gonna be a mouthful, sorry. Season nine, episode two. This is called Death in Hell's Kitchen. It is on Discovery+.

  17. Speaker 3· Soundbite1:02

    Julio Ramirez.

  18. Speaker 4· Soundbite1:03

What happened to Julio? Was his death just an unfortunate accident?

  19. Carlos Ramirez· Soundbite1:07

I wasn't buying that. Who were these people? How did this happen?

  20. Shiva· Soundbite1:11

He was supposed to call me back, and... [cries] Sorry.

  21. Linda Umberger· Soundbite1:17

There was the very clear voice saying, "Mom, you need to go get the people that did this."

  22. Speaker 4· Soundbite1:24

The first victim was a young social worker. Now we're hearing about the man visiting from Washington, DC.

  23. Speaker 8· Soundbite1:29

    The possible
