For numerous reasons, I've completely switched over from using plastic cell trays for seed starting to using soil blocks. Soil blocks are the best fit for me. To help you determine whether plastic trays or soil blocks are the best fit for your seed starting plans, this week I am breaking down the pros and cons of both methods.

Hi, everybody. It's Joe Lamp'l, the Joe behind Joe Gardener, and welcome to The Joe Gardener Show. We are in the thick of seed-starting season, at least here in the South. Atlanta, Georgia, is where I am. But if you're not there yet, you will be getting there soon if you're a seed starter. And I've been talking a lot about what I've been doing with my seed sowing lately, and especially with the soil blocking. I'm getting a lot of questions about that as I'm posting to Instagram and making YouTube videos. And the question comes up now a lot about what's the benefit of using soil blocks over plastic? You know, why should I switch, or why should I consider switching? And so I thought it would be a good idea to address that specific question, and not to say that one is better than another, but to explore the pros and cons of soil blocks and plastic so that you can make the proper decision. And I would start off by saying it's not an either/or. It's a matter of which works best for you for that time, and maybe you're using both. So we'll talk about when that scenario would come into play and some other things that I think you will find interesting at least, and maybe that will sway you in one direction or the next. I'm not here to convince you or sell you on one method over the other, but I want to put out the issues and talk about them. And then if you have some feedback, I would love to hear that.
