4 Mistakes People Make When Hybrid Training | Fergus Crawley
5/25/202650 min
Fergus Crawley is a true hybrid athlete with a 500 pound squat, a 250 kilogram deadlift, a marathon under three hours ten and an Ironman under twelve hours.
In this episode, he breaks down the four biggest mistakes in hybrid training so you can avoid learning the hard way. He shares the core principle of balancing your total capacity, explaining how to organise strength and endurance in the same week, manage real-world double sessions, and why the belief that cardio destroys muscle is based on bad science.
Fergus also takes recovery back to basics with a focus on sleep, food and sensible planning instead of quick fix gadgets. He opens up on how training became a mental anchor in a noisy world and why clear, measurable physical progress is so powerful for mental health.
Fergus has now completed ten Ironman triathlons in ten United Kingdom cities across ten days, marking a decade since his suicide attempt and continuing his mission to raise money and awareness for mens mental health.

[upbeat music] Where are you from up north?
Fergus Crawley· Guest0:08
Edinburgh.
Spencer Matthews· Host0:09
You're from Edinburgh?
Fergus Crawley· Guest0:10
Yeah, hence the thick Scottish accent. Yes.
Spencer Matthews· Host0:12
Do you have a thick Scottish accent?
Fergus Crawley· Guest0:14
That was sarcasm.
Spencer Matthews· Host0:15
Oh.
Fergus Crawley· Guest0:15
Yeah, yeah. So yeah, there we go. We've, we've, we've leveled out. I'm a British accent. You're an English accent.
Spencer Matthews· Host0:21
Yeah.
Fergus Crawley· Guest0:21
I should have a Scottish accent or a Scouse accent.
Spencer Matthews· Host0:23
But here we are. But you don't.
Fergus Crawley· Guest0:24
I don't. No. So I'm just one big disappointment.
Spencer Matthews· Host0:27
So let's continue that theme. No, you're, you're, you're very far from disappointing, actually. I've been looking forward to talking to you, um, because your name has been mentioned many times to us when discussing untapped athletes.
Fergus Crawley· Guest0:39
Okay.
Spencer Matthews· Host0:40
So I don't know how aware you are of this, but a little while ago, just for a bit of fun, I kind of put out two parameters- Yep ... uh, in order to, to essentially be, uh, you know, a, a phenomenal hybrid athlete, and I set the parameters just for fun at the time as a, a sub 2:50 marathon and 110 kilo for 10 bench.
Fergus Crawley· Guest1:01
Yep.
Spencer Matthews· Host1:02
And I put it out there and just said, you know, "ChatGPT thinks very few people can do this. You know, if you know anyone that can do this, sing out." And, and a lot of people were, were banging the Fergus Crawley drum.
Fergus Crawley· Guest1:14
Okay. Okay.
Spencer Matthews· Host1:15
Can you do it?
Fergus Crawley· Guest1:16
Not right now, no, 'cause I'm currently training for something else.
Spencer Matthews· Host1:19
Right.
Fergus Crawley· Guest1:20
But that's how training and fitness should operate, I believe.
Spencer Matthews· Host1:22
Yeah.
Fergus Crawley· Guest1:23
Should someone be able to do that at all times? Is that part of the- No, no, no, just- ... parameters that you're working towards?
Spencer Matthews· Host1:27
No, no, just, just, um, you would need to
