315. How Lower Carb Arguments Miss The Mark, Answering Bicarb Questions, Overload Weeks, and Heat Training!

6/16/20261 hr 27 min

We developed the ultimate AM wake-up hack (which we tell you about in the intro) before this great episode! A main science topic was a new paper on how the temperature in an athlete’s training location influences race performance. It tells a story about heat training generally that everyone needs to pay attention to.

And guess what? A new journal article makes yet another argument against higher carb approaches. David brings big rant energy and we talk about how the scope of conclusions from exercise science can sometimes be misinterpreted.

Plus, there were so many fun discussions! Other topics: Megan’s new documentary coming out on Thursday, what we’re seeing with bicarb use, overload training weeks, some cool science on Omega-3 supplementation, and questions on carbs in cycling, the backwards treadmill, big races, and more!

To paraphrase our muse Jesse McCartney: we don’t want this episode to go to waste, we want you and your beautiful listens.

We love you all! HUZZAH!

  1. Megan Roche· Host0:00

    Woo-hoo.

  2. David Roche· Host0:01

Welcome to the Summer Call Play podcast. We are so happy to be with you today.

  3. Megan Roche· Host0:04

    Happy Tuesday.

  4. David Roche· Host0:05

    It's Tuesday.

  5. Megan Roche· Host0:05

And it's a Jesse McCartney Tuesday over here.

  6. David Roche· Host0:08

Oh my gosh. Every day is Jesse McCartney day for the rest of our lives.

  7. Megan Roche· Host0:11

At 5:00 AM sharp- [laughs] ... we turn on Beautiful Soul, and it is the best way to start the day.

  8. David Roche· Host0:15

Okay, I looked up when this song was from. It's from 2004. It's of the kind of teeny bop genre. It makes you feel like you've just had a lobotomy with the lyrics.

  9. Megan Roche· Host0:23

    [laughs] Yeah.

  10. David Roche· Host0:24

But something about the song is so uplifting and, like, well-meaning that you just feel ready to attack the day.

  11. Megan Roche· Host0:29

I just wanna sing it, and- [laughs] ... sing it loud. And something about the lyrics are great for me because sometimes I don't know the lyrics to songs.

  12. David Roche· Host0:36

    Yeah.

  13. Megan Roche· Host0:36

    But this one, I got.

  14. David Roche· Host0:37

[laughs] Yeah. And we all need to be told we have a beautiful soul, right? Yeah, in fact, so this all gets back to my foot. So this song was used on the television show Hacks, and it's a beautiful show, and it was a beautiful scene. And a- Actually- Yeah ...

  15. Megan Roche· Host0:50

in the scene, I didn't recognize Jesse McCartney.

  16. David Roche· Host0:52

    Yeah.

  17. Megan Roche· Host0:52

Turns out he's almost 40, and I was like, "Who is that guy?" [laughs] And they started playing Beautiful Soul, and I was like, "Oh."

  18. David Roche· Host0:57

    Yeah.

  19. Megan Roche· Host0:57

    Happens to us all.

  20. David Roche· Host0:58

Well, as another song from back then said, Megan, the years start coming and they don't stop coming. [laughs] [laughs] Hey now, you're an all star. [laughs] Okay. So I heard that, and then I was like, you know what? With this foot injury, I just haven't been uplifting enough. I've been, like, fighting my foot. Instead, my foot is gonna be called Jesse McCartney, and it's gonna be saying Beautiful Soul, which has two meanings, obviously, to me every day. And all of a sudden, my foot started healing. And as we're recording this on Tuesday, I had a better run than I've had in so many months. So I think the Jesse McCartney principle healed my foot.
