314. Carbs and Bone Health, A Reproducibility Crisis in Training Science, Wild Data on Post-Exercise Ketones, and Trail Supershoe Data!

6/9/20261 hr 34 min

We removed all the cutlery from our house before this great episode! The main science discussion was on a new study looking at reproducibility of adaptations in individual athletes. The relatively surprising finding is that there was no significant correlation in how the same athlete responds to the same intervention across time. We discuss what that means for training science. The word “holistic” is coming in hot.

We also talked about a new study on post-exercise ketones, finding a 15% increase in natural EPO levels. Even knowing that, we aren’t recommending ketones to many athletes we coach. What’s going on? The disclaimers will blot out the sun.

And this one was full of fun topics! Other topics: when good butter knives go bad, Tom Evans doing the coolest downhill training on the treadmill, new trail supershoe data, a study on carb intake and bone health, and how collagen may impact bone health for female athletes. Plus questions on breathing, uphill treadmill miles, breakups, programming workouts, coaching communication, and more.

We love you all! HUZZAH!

  1. Megan Roche· Host0:01

    Woo-hoo.

  2. David Roche· Host0:01

Welcome to the Some Work All Play podcast. We are so happy to be with you today.

  3. Megan Roche· Host0:04

    Happy Tuesday.

  4. David Roche· Host0:05

    It's Tuesday.

  5. Megan Roche· Host0:06

And I'm hiding the butter knives on this Tuesday.

  6. David Roche· Host0:08

Oh my God, Megan, you definitely need to do that right now.

  7. Megan Roche· Host0:10

Ah, yeah, we gotta put them somewhere safe.

  8. David Roche· Host0:13

[laughs] [laughs] Okay, okay. So this is referencing last Wednesday, I went to an ortho. He's the team doctor for the Denver Broncos. That seems like a big deal.

  9. Megan Roche· Host0:20

Oh, really? I feel like a lot of the orthopedic surgeons are like, "I'm the team doctor for the Broncos." [laughs] He's probably got some MLB teams on there, some NBA teams.

  10. David Roche· Host0:28

    He does. Toronto Blue Jays.

  11. Megan Roche· Host0:29

Oh, I'm like, how many plantar fascis of the Blue Jays have you touched?

  12. David Roche· Host0:32

    I'm sure all of them.

  13. Megan Roche· Host0:33

    [laughs] Yeah.

  14. David Roche· Host0:34

Actually, I wonder if that can go, uh, be a negative. Like if you're the team doctor for the Cleveland Browns, if everybody's like, "Nope, we aren't clear with you."

  15. Megan Roche· Host0:41

    [laughs] We're out.

  16. David Roche· Host0:42

We're not gonna win a single game. But he was awesome, and he talked about different ways to get this plantar healthy. The main one was doing PRP, and I'm hesitant to do that solely because it'll make me go on crutches for a little bit, and I wanna be able to parent to my maximum extent. Like that's the main thing I want this summer is to be at the top of my game with that and to enjoy the trails with you or at least be able to bike with you.

  17. Megan Roche· Host1:01

And I feel like you're just in a really hard place with the decision-making- Yeah ... of trying to figure that out. We were actually like in bed last night, and you just gave me this like really loving kiss. [laughs] And at the end of the kiss, you just turned and looked at me, and I was like, "Wow-" Yeah. "... what's he gonna say?" And you're like, "Megan, PRP or focus shockwave." [laughs] You should've added the butter knife as a third option in there.

  18. David Roche· Host1:18

[laughs] Yeah, yeah, exactly. Door three, you do not wanna take. But in that process, the ortho talked about Graston, and doing Graston after the PRP, after I'd come back, and I've never had that done. So I looked it up on the internet.
