264: Michelle Payne (Part B)

History-maker. Trailblazer. And bloody tough!
This one goes far beyond that unforgettable Melbourne Cup winning ride back in 2015.
Yes, we relive the moment that stopped a nation, from the ride, the roar, the words that echoed around the world. And of course Stevie and the relationship she has with her brother. But this is the Michelle you don’t always see or hear.
A decade on from her historic win, she opens up on the whirlwind that followed: the pressure, the expectations, and then yet another near death experience.
From growing up in a racing family to navigating fame, loss, and everything in between, this is a story about grit, perspective, and staying true to yourself when the world is watching.
There’s heartbreak, there’s humour, and there’s a whole lot of honesty. And it’s one you won’t forget.

[guitar music] You are listening to episode two hundred and sixty-four of The Howie Games, Part B, featuring all-round gun Michelle Payne. Roll it, Tommy. I'm sure-- I'll play some of you the race in a moment. I, I'm sure you have had thousands of people come up and tell you their Prince of Penzance story. It's, it's like early days on this show, Cathy Freeman spoke about all the different people that would come up and share their experience of the race, and she loved it because she felt she'd spoke enough about the race. She loved other people's experiences. So before we get into it, I'm gonna tell you my experience, which is one of a, a missed opportunity with your horse. [chuckles] So a, a very good friend of mine- Can I stop you for one second? Yeah. Of course you can.
Michelle Payne· Guest0:49
That's good.
Mark Howard· Host0:50
Everything okay?
Michelle Payne· Guest0:50
Yeah.

Very good friend of mine who's worked in TV, he now produces The Front Bar on Channel Seven, by the name Adrian Brown. He rang me three days before the Melbourne Cup. He said, "I've got a runner in the Melbourne Cup." [chuckles] And I'm like, "Piss off, Adi. You've got a runner in the Melbourne Cup." [chuckles] He said, "Mate, I'm a part o-owner of this horse called Prince of Penzance." And I said, "What, what do you mean you're a part owner?" Like, he said, "I don't own much of it, but I own part of this horse." I said, "Okay, what's its price?" He said, "I think it'll start a hundred to one, but I think you should back it." [chuckles] I'm like, "Adi, I'm not wasting my money on a horse at a hundred to one." Now, looking back, that is a foolish, foolish statement on my behalf.
