264: Michelle Payne (Part A)

3/31/20261 hr 5 min

History-maker. Trailblazer. And bloody tough!

This one goes far beyond that unforgettable Melbourne Cup winning ride back in 2015.

Yes, we relive the moment that stopped a nation, from the ride, the roar, the words that echoed around the world. And of course Stevie and the relationship she has with her brother. But this is the Michelle you don’t always see or hear.

A decade on from her historic win, she opens up on the whirlwind that followed: the pressure, the expectations, and then yet another near death experience.

From growing up in a racing family to navigating fame, loss, and everything in between, this is a story about grit, perspective, and staying true to yourself when the world is watching.

There’s heartbreak, there’s humour, and there’s a whole lot of honesty. And it’s one you won’t forget.

  5. Michelle Payne· Guest0:29

[clapping] [cheering] I'm so glad to win the Melbourne Cup, and hopefully to, it'll help female jockeys from now on to get more of a go, because I believe that we sort of don't get enough of a go and, and hopefully this will help.

  6. Mark Howard· Host0:39

A truly iconic moment in Australian sport. Michelle Payne, build the woman a statue, which they now have.

  7. Michelle Payne· Guest0:48

I walked in here as a young girl thinking, you know, how privileged it was just to be here, to be riding and to be competing. To now have a statue for life, I couldn't be happier.

  8. Mark Howard· Host0:58

So I could do a long intro here because Michelle Payne is a seriously impressive person. But I'll cut to the chase and simply say that this is one of my favorite episodes for a long time. And Michelle's care for her brother Stevie during the recording, which you'll hear, made a huge impression on me.

  9. Speaker 21:15

[singing] So many lost and left behind, and no one seemed to care. Those who should, seems like they're blind, pretending they're not there. Can't they see they hold the key?
