1784: "If Creation Is Play of Brahman, Why all the Suffering?" | Bhakti-Vedānta and Līlā

6/23/20261 hr 1 min

If creation is God's play, why do we suffer? It's one of the oldest questions in philosophy — and the Srimad Bhagavatam answers it through the Rāsa Līlā. A full cup doesn't drink. It overflows. Krishna doesn't enjoy with the gopīs the way we pursue romance — trying to fill something missing. He's imparting what's already overflowing. We're different. When we try to enjoy others, we're trying to enjoy what was never ours. Raghunath and Kaustubha explore that distinction alongside one of the deepest questions in Vedic thought — and the answer that only bhakti can give.

Srimad Bhagavatam 10.30.32-34

  1. Kaustubha Das· Host0:00

I once heard this nice explanation, Raghunath. You may have heard this before too.

  2. Raghunath· Host0:03

    Tell me.

  3. Kaustubha Das· Host0:03

You take a, a drunk man, right?

  4. Raghunath· Host0:06

    Yeah.

  5. Kaustubha Das· Host0:06

He's walking out of the bar, he's out on the street. He's feeling no pain, as they say sometimes.

  6. Raghunath· Host0:12

Feeling no pain, which means he's feeling so much pain.

  7. Kaustubha Das· Host0:15

[laughs] No, no, he's feeling no pain in this moment at least.

  8. Raghunath· Host0:18

    Right.

  9. Kaustubha Das· Host0:18

And, and he starts to sing, right?

  10. Raghunath· Host0:21

    Yeah.

  11. Kaustubha Das· Host0:21

He just starts to sing. You know, he looks ridiculous to everybody else.

  12. Raghunath· Host0:24

    Sure.

  13. Kaustubha Das· Host0:25

Now, why is he singing? It's not that... Maybe there's... He doesn't even recognize that there's anybody in the street. He's not singing to impress anyone. He's not singing 'cause he gets paid for it like, you know, some big band maybe at the Hellfest, maybe that was their motive.

  14. Raghunath· Host0:39

    Right.

  15. Kaustubha Das· Host0:40

He's not, he's not, you know, he's, he's not singing for fame. Why is he singing? He's not singing to gain pleasure, like there's something empty in him that he wants to f- He's singing out of pleasure.

  16. Raghunath· Host0:53

    Sure.

  17. Kaustubha Das· Host0:54

It's an expression of the pleasure that he has within. It's not to get pleasure, it's an overflowing of pleasure.

  18. Raghunath· Host1:01

    Mm-hmm.

  19. Kaustubha Das· Host1:01

And so we can understand, why does God create this universe? Why does he create all of us? It's not that he's acting for pleasure, but he's acting out of pleasure, and it's, it can be explained, y- you know, when something is... Like you take a cup and it's full, right? Um, it doesn't need anything else to fill it in. But a really full cup overflows,
