On this week’s episode of AvTalk, a Lufthansa 787 takes a bow in Frankfurt, the NTSB issues its preliminary report on the United 767 accident in Newark, and Canadian authorities charge a former Air Canada pilot with fraud and forgery after it was discovered he flew for the airline without ever having the appropriate license. We also check in on the IATA annual general meeting to see airlines looking hopeful about Boeing’s certification efforts, gloomy about sustainable aviation fuel, and stormy about the current (and future) price of jet fuel.

[upbeat music] Hello, and welcome to episode 374 of AvTalk. I am Ian Petchenik here, as always with Jason Rabinowitz.
Jason Rabinowitz· Host0:17
Hello, Ian. What's going on in apparently very rainy Chicago?
Ian Petchenik· Host0:21
Oh, it was very, very wet.
Jason Rabinowitz· Host0:24
It's summer.
Ian Petchenik· Host0:24
And it's summer, yep. The thunderstorms are moving through. Unfortunately, the thunderstorms thundered into my house a little bit.
Jason Rabinowitz· Host0:32
That's not supposed to happen.
Ian Petchenik· Host0:32
So our recording today was delayed by me mopping up a little bit.
Jason Rabinowitz· Host0:37
Ground delay program issued at- Ground, yeah, ground delay, exactly, both at the airport and in my house.
Ian Petchenik· Host0:43
So the Flightradar24 North American office is now a bit drier, thankfully. But it's summer in Chicago, so these things happen. There's trees down around the neighborhood, so it was pretty windy, and O'Hare shut down for a bit. I screenshotted the METAR at the time of windiest, and it said- What, what did it say?
Jason Rabinowitz· Host1:02
Just don't bother?
Ian Petchenik· Host1:03
Well, it was five lines long. [laughs] And, and yes, basically said, "Don't bother." Let's see, winds 250 at 26, gust 45.
Jason Rabinowitz· Host1:13
Oh, that, that's not terrible.
Ian Petchenik· Host1:14
Visibility half a statute mile.
Jason Rabinowitz· Host1:16
Oh.
Ian Petchenik· Host1:17
Runway. [laughs] The RVR on the departure runway was eh, thunderstorms, broken clouds at- Oh ... ground level, broken clouds just above ground level, overcast at 1,000
