12: COVID-19 | The Lab Leak Theory & Vaccine Mandates
5/12/202637 min
The lab leak. The five-eyes suppression. The gain-of-function funding trail. The Beagle experiments. The suppressed treatments. The modellers whose predictions shaped policy but whose data no one could check. The social media companies that quietly moved the goalposts on what counted as misinformation - and who told them to.
The thing is - some of this is now documented. The lab leak hypothesis, once treated as a dangerous fringe idea, is now the assessed position of multiple US intelligence agencies. Emails obtained through FOIA requests showed senior scientists privately voicing concerns they publicly dismissed. Gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology was partly funded, indirectly, through bodies connected to the NIH - and whether that meets the technical definition of "gain-of-function" became, itself, a political question.
So where does the documented end - and the mythology begin?
In this episode, Richard Baker and Dr. Nick Coatsworth go back to the beginning - not to relitigate the pandemic, but to ask what we actually know now that we didn't then, and what the episode tells us about science, power, and what happens when the two collide under pressure.
- The lab leak - what the intelligence assessments actually say, what they don't, and why "we don't know" is a more honest answer than either side wants to give
- The Fauci emails, the beagle experiments, and the gain-of-function funding trail - what the documents show and what's still being disputed
- The suppressed treatments question - hydroxychloroquine, ivermectin, and how a genuine scientific debate became a culture war
- The Great Barrington Declaration - who signed it, who attacked it, and whether the pushback was about the science or the politics
- The social media censorship question - what platforms suppressed, who guided them, and how some of it has since been quietly un-suppressed
- What the pandemic tells us about institutional trust - and whether the damage done to public confidence in health authorities was earned, inflicted, or both
Some of this is documented. Some remains contested. And almost none of it is as simple as either side wants you to believe.

All right, folks, something a bit different on the Conspiracy Cabal today. Going back to our normal roles, I'm playing journalist, Nick is my interview subject, and I'm gonna ask him about something we never wanna talk about again, the COVID-19 pandemic, and all the conspiracy theories that have sprung from it. Nick, welcome to my show.
Nick Coatsworth· Host0:24
[laughs] [laughs] Love it, Rich. I think, uh, you know, if I was attached to any sort of physiologic monitoring device, you'd, uh, see that my hands were getting a little bit sweaty and my heart rate was going up. So we better cue the music in.

[rock music] The theory that the COVID pandemic was caused by a leak from a Chinese government-controlled lab was largely dismissed by mainstream scientists at the start of the pandemic. This week, the FBI director, for the first time publicly, gave the agency's official position.
Christopher Wray· Soundbite1:05
Uh, the FBI has for, uh, quite some time now assessed that the origins of the pandemic are most likely a potential lab incident in Wuhan.
Richard Baker· Host1:15
[rock music] Well, Nick, thank you for being here. Uh, and for listeners, we have not shared anything on this. This is totally,
