She was an indigenous leader in Honduras, and it's been proven that the dam company building the dam she was protesting orchestrated a hit on her with the help of various hitmen, government officials, police, et cetera. It was a horrific ordeal for Berta's family, for the whole movement in Honduras, and it also raised the profile of just how dangerous it was to be an environmental activist in Honduras.
